I think it is a shame that these fools caused the death of 11 people and are ruining our Earth. I know that Harry Reid initiated a bill that raises the liability of oil companies but that is not enough. We really do need to solve this energy problem or we will be in worse shape than we are now.

The ramifications for HBCUs and other minority serving institutions of higher education are quite relevant. Please note the name of the reconciliation package: The Health and Education Reconciliation Act. While much attention has been directed to healthcare, significant resources are made available for colleges students in need of assistance, through the Pell grant and Direct Lending provisions. Additionally, $150 million is available for community colleges and more than $850 million in mandatory funded is now available to HBCUs over a 10-year period, under Title III, Part B of the higher education act. This mandatory funding is above and beyond funding provided in the discretionary component of Title III, Part B. This recognition is a major accomplishment for HBCUs, In total, more than $2.5 billion is available including funding for Hispanic Serving and Tribal institutions of higher education. Congratulations to those who helped to make it happen, particularly members of the Congressional Black Caucus!

Anita,

Thanks for sharing this. Your words gave me relief and eased my own anxieties about what I saw and heard. I sent it to at least 5 other people.

You know, this whole environment at present really makes you reflect on who we are as a nation. Or, do we know who we are? There is much to this notion of no longer having this enemy (Communism) and building around whatever some nations were portrayed not to be as our reason(s) to do better. So, here we are - a nation in transition -- no longer teaching young school children to sing O Beautiful for Spacious Skies or saying the Pledge of Allegiance each morning. But, we spend hours watching and reading about the personal tragedies and missteps of others, invading personal privacy and space while working to protect to extremes -- property rights in America. Here we are -- a nation with a Black President with those celebrating most being Black people who once had only used text books and wrapped them with brown paper bags to limit further spoil. Sort of ironic in a day and time when so many of our young know so little of their history or the history of this nation... and, in turn, cannot appreciate the moment or find real conflict in the moment. Look, here we are talking about health care reform at a time when the Baby Boomer generation will turn 65 for the first time next year and begin the Silver Tsunami. Health Reform is not a choice it is an absolute necessity in a nation that is both graying and browning. It is really a sad day when a nation that knows not who it is turns in extremes on each other. I don't know whether what I feel is joy or pain. Sometimes I can't even tell the difference.

Your writing gave me relief. It was my Rolaids for the day.

I agree with you 100%. This is our country and we must take pride not only in it, but our actions. Across the world people are watching how we behave in this moment and more than that, historians will write about it. Surely those who oppose the reform can find a better way to do it.

I believe that no matter the state of the economy, the opportunity to create your own wealth is always present. People should stop thinking about a job and think about how they can become employers. There are still plenty of opportunities out there for small business owners.
